The Silencing of Free Speech

Free Speech is under attack. I live in this country; you live in this country.  My freedom is your freedom.  My right to speak is your right to speak. Our freedom of speech is in danger as Big Brother and Big Tech have joined forces to control the flow of information. Since when are we China or Iran where government controls the airways?  Are we to succumb to state-run media where the government pumps its propaganda day and night dictating what we should think or believe as it claims to know best?  NEVER!

In this past election, social media companies like Facebook and Twitter took it upon themselves to censor anything that went against their political views and actually violated the whole purpose of their platforms.  During the summer of riots, they helped mainstream media in trying to hide the real violence that took over the “peaceful protests.” In fact, even President Trump has been consistently censored by Twitter. Not to mention the constant censorship and fact checking by mainstream media. THE President of the United States! Imagine that.

Journalism is dying and there are few real journalists that know how to investigate and report a story. It is a sad day in journalism when the hardest question you can ask a politician is about the flavor of his ice cream.

There is a fear of misinformation being spread. Big Brother and Big Tech have decided to take away our right to think for ourselves. Opposite viewpoints, opinions, and even facts that go against the status quo of mainstream news are suppressed. Warnings pop up like parental advisories on controversial posts. As if we are children in need of adult supervision to navigate the media highway.

The truth is that all the major media outlets including newspapers and magazines are owned by six corporations and some of the wealthiest people in the United States. Forbes did an extensive report on the subject, about four years ago, with a full list. Read it for yourself.

We may not agree with one another in politics, religion, or lifestyle; but I’m sure we can agree that freedom of speech belongs to all of us. We need to be vigilant in protecting those rights for everyone. We can support independent and unbiased journalism. We can stand up to those who try to silence us.
